ActUp! Youth Sailing is an innovative project aimed at empowering young people to become climate change advocates. We want to support adolescents in getting involved in the issues that affect them personally in their everyday lives, such as experiences of racism, exclusion or other discriminations.

Young people need exchange to find solutions to the many global crises. With a traditional sailing ship, we want to create meeting and learning spaces. There they can acquire the necessary skills to develop holistic and globally just approaches.

Everyday life on a tall ship requires the cooperation and collaboration of everyone involved. On our cruises, they learn practical skills and theoretical knowledge that help them to work together cross-culturally and develop the knowledge of their own agency.

Through partnerships and collaborations with organizations involved in climate protection, the project aims to raise awareness and inspire others to take action.

The association

With our association Bildung und Solidarität e.V. (Education and Solidarity ) we will offer several educational trips each summer. As in previous years, the focus of our educational work will be to sensitise people to ecological and social issues. A sailing ship is an ideal platform for this. Participants learn directly that it is possible to move only with the power of the wind, and at the same time they are underway in exciting and varied ecosystems that they often experience for the first time. With trips in the Baltic and North Seas, participants gain a new understanding of coastal, tidal flat and marine ecosystems and the changes that are being triggered by climate change. In winter, we want to offer an international exchange on the Atlantic.

The ship

Example of a schooner brig: The “Raven” with square sails on the foremast and square rigged sails on the mainmast

We are looking for a brig or schooner brig with a length of 30 metres (LWL). For reasons of safety and ease of maintenance, we are looking exclusively for a ship with a steel hull and a draught of at least 2.5 metres.
We are in contact with the owners of some ships that match our ideas.

Empowerment through theatre education

Part of our association is already a theatre project for children and young people in Leipzig. Using theatre pedagogy methods, we will create meeting and learning spaces on the ship in which participants learn the skills and gain the self-confidence to stand up for the issues that affect them in their everyday lives, such as experiences of racism, climate change or inclusion. In this context, we also particularly target young people who are affected by (multiple) discrimination. On our trips, they learn practical skills and theoretical knowledge that help them work together across cultures and develop knowledge of their own agency.
